At the corner of North Market Street and Grove Avenue in Petersburg are the remains of what is quite possibly the oldest building in the Town of Petersburg—Peter Jones Trading Post. Estimated to have been built between 1650 and 1750, it served as a trading post with people in the town and Native Americans. During the Civil War, the building alternately served as a prison and a hospital. Most of the building was destroyed by a fire in the 1980s.
