Parks, Trails & River Access

Petersburg’s outdoor spaces include Popular Lawn Park, Appamatuck Park, Rotary Park on Pocahontas Island, and segments of the Lower Appomattox River Trail maintained by Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR). These areas provide open green space, walking routes, and select access points along the Appomattox River within the city.

Popular Lawn Park

Poplar Lawn Park, formerly known as Central Park, is a historic four-block green space in Petersburg’s nationally registered Poplar Lawn neighborhood. The park has witnessed key moments in the city’s history, from the War of 1812 to the Civil War, and today offers open lawns, mature trees, walking paths, and space for community events.

Rotary Park – Pocahontas Island

Rotary Park is located on historic Pocahontas Island in Petersburg, Virginia. The park provides open green space near one of the city’s most historically significant neighborhoods, offering a quiet setting along the Appomattox River corridor. Segments of the Lower Appomattox River Trail run through Petersburg, connecting areas such as Appamatuck Park and Rotary Park on Pocahontas Island. Maintained in partnership with Friends of the Lower Appomattox River (FOLAR), the trail offers accessible outdoor recreation along the Appomattox River corridor.
